I've been working on my family genealogy since about 2004. It wasn't something that I started doing out of necessity, but I kinda fell into it. After I first got into from an old tree that a cousin had created from a past family reunion on my dad's side of the family, my great-uncle Arthur had handed me the book that he had assembled with even more information on my dad's mother's side of the family. It's what got me started.
Today, I'm at over 10,000 people on my dad's family tree (due to finding some...interesting branches of the tree and also some very extensive work by some distant cousins) that goes back to 16th century England, pretty cool. My mothers tree is not as full, I'm probably over 200 people at last check, but it's a very complex tree. If you like solving puzzles and mysteries, you'll love working on your family tree. Just when you think you have something figured out, another 20 questions pops up. I have found out some interesting things though:
I have a g-g-g-g-grandfather that was an overseer on a plantation and married a slave. A g-g-g-grandmother was named Pinky and was Indian, but can't figure out what tribe. I've discovered who owned certain members of my family in the years after slavery ended. And sometimes, if you came from a big family and you died, your spouse married your sister. It happened. A lot. Half-siblings and cousins. Weird.
